What Does Muck Mean in Poker?

To muck is to fold face down, and the muck is the discard pile. Learn showdown order and why mucking a winning hand is an expensive mistake.

To muck is to fold your cards face down, and the muck is the pile of dead cards sitting in front of the dealer. The word works as both verb and noun: you muck your hand, and your hand goes into the muck. Once your cards touch that pile they are dead, and they stay dead even if they were the best hand at the table.

Showdown order decides who acts first

Preflop and on every street, mucking is just folding without showing. At showdown it becomes a decision, because the order of revealing is fixed by the rules of the room.

Everyone after that may either table their hand or muck it. Cards speak at showdown, so a hand you turn face up wins on its merits whether or not you read it correctly. A hand you release face down wins nothing.

The hand you should never muck

You hold A♣2♣ in the big blind and the board runs out 3♦4♥5♠K♦9♣. You call a $60 river bet into a $180 pot. Your opponent tables K♠Q♠ and says "top pair".

If you glance at ace-high and toss your cards, you have just donated $240. You made a wheel — 5♠4♥3♦2♣A♣ — and the dealer would have pushed you the pot without comment. Turn the hand over and let the dealer read it.

How to avoid an expensive muck

Protect yourself with three habits, all of them free.

  • Table every hand you called with. If you paid to see a showdown, you have bought the right to be read. There is no upside to hiding a losing hand you already paid for.
  • Hold your cards until the pot is pushed. Do not slide them forward while the dealer is still working. Anything within reach of the muck can be swept up by accident.
  • Know the rankings cold. Straights hide, and counterfeit boards confuse people under pressure. Run through a poker hand rankings chart until reading a board is automatic rather than something you do while the table waits.

Mucking correctly is fine and costs nothing. Mucking a winner is one of the few mistakes in poker that no amount of skill later in the session can win back.
