What Is a Hero Fold in Poker?

A hero fold is laying down a hand strong enough to call with — top pair with a good kicker, an overpair, sometimes a set — because your opponent's line only makes sense with something better. It is the mirror image of a hero call: instead of paying off a bluff, you refuse to pay off a value bet that almost everyone else calls.

How a hero fold plays out

$2/$5 online, $600 behind. You open A♠K♦ from the HJ and a tight, passive regular calls in the BB. They call your bet on K♥9♦4♣ and again on the 2♣ turn, and $300 sits in the middle going to the river.

The river is the J♠ — no flush, only a QT straight — and they overbet $420. Top pair top kicker is strong and the price is 1.7 to 1, so you need to win about 37% of the time. You fold anyway: a passive player who calls twice and then overbets into the preflop raiser turns up KJ, J9s, QT, 99 and 44 far more often than a missed club draw.

The reads that justify it

• Sizing that climbs. Passive players shrink their bluffs. An overbet from someone who has shown no aggression all session is the loudest tell in poker.
• No missed draws. Count the draws that got there and bricked. If the board offers almost none, the bet is value by elimination.
• Player type. Hero folds are for stations and rocks, not for a regular who barrels three streets with a balanced range.
• Blockers. If your cards remove the bluffs you hoped to catch and none of the value, folding gets easier.

Why ICM turns close calls into folds

In a tournament the chips you win are worth less than the chips you lose. Doubling up does not double your prize equity, but busting costs you all of it, so a call that breaks even in chips can still lose money. That is why the biggest folds happen on bubbles and at final tables.

Where hero folds go wrong

Fold too often and the read stops being a read. Minimum defence frequency — pot divided by pot plus bet — is the floor: against that $420 overbet into $300 you can fold about 58% of your range and no more.

So name the hands. If you can list what you are folding to and explain why the bluffs are not there, you have made a hero fold. If you cannot, you have made an ordinary fold with a flattering name.
