Pair vs Two Overcards: The Flip Is 55/45, Not Even

An overcard arrives by the river about half the time, yet the small pair still wins roughly 55%. Why the classic race quietly favors the pair.

A pocket pair against two overcards is not a coin flip. The pair wins about 55% of the time against two unsuited overcards, and closer to 50% when those overcards are suited. The matchup feels even because an overcard lands somewhere on the board roughly half the time — but an overcard arriving is not the same as the hand being lost.

The pair is already the best hand

Deal 8♥8♣ against A♠K♦ and the hand is over unless something changes. The eights are ahead right now. Ace-king is two live cards and nothing more.

That asymmetry is the whole matchup. The overcards have to improve to win. The pair only has to survive.

Ace-king holds six clean outs — three aces and three kings — plus backdoor straights, and a flush when the two cards share a suit. Every other card is a blank that leaves the pair in front.

The numbers worth knowing

Every version of this matchup lands inside a band about seven points wide. You do not need to memorise a table of equities, only where the edges of that band sit.

Two things fall out of that table. Suitedness matters more than the rank of the pair, and no arrangement of the matchup ever strays far from even money. Whichever side you hold, you are risking a stack on something between a 50% and a 57% shot.

An overcard is not a disaster

Six outs across five board cards is a lot of coverage. At least one ace or king appears on the flop about one time in three, and at least one has arrived by the river about 51% of the time. Read those numbers quickly and the pair looks doomed.

It is not, and the arithmetic that reconciles it is the pair's own improvement. You flop a set roughly 12% of the time — about one hand in eight — and by the river you have made a set or better about one time in five. Many of those hands come on exactly the boards that also brought an ace, and a set beats top pair.

Subtract that overlap from the 51% and you land back at 45%. The overcard shows up half the time; it wins slightly less often than that.

None of this survives contact with a flop you actually have to play, though. All-in preflop, you get paid for every one of those five board cards. Check-calling a flop of A♦9♠4♣ with 8♥8♣ is a different problem, because you will not always be shown the last two cards, and folding there costs you the runouts where you would have spiked the case eight.

What actually changes the number

Suitedness is worth about five points. A♠K♠ against 2♥2♣ is close to a genuine 50/50. The flush does not only win hands the offsuit version loses, it wins them on boards where ace-king never paired at all.

Connectedness adds a little. Q♠J♠ against 7♥7♣ runs closer to even than A♠K♦ does, because queen-jack makes straights that ace-king cannot. Broadway hands with a gap sit between the two.

Pair rank matters at the edges. Deuces are worse than eights for a reason that has nothing to do with the flop: on a board like K♠K♥9♦9♣4♠ your pair is counterfeited entirely and you are playing the board with a bad kicker. High pairs survive those runouts; the smallest ones do not.

Ranges beat hands. All of the above assumes you know exactly which two cards you face. In a real hand you face a range, and a range that jams over your open holds QQ+ as well as AK. Your 8♥8♣ is 55/45 against the ace-king part and roughly 20/80 against the queens-plus part, which is why the same shove can be a call at one table and a fold at another.

Small pairs do not make their money winning races. They make it on the 12% of flops where they hit a set and get paid, which is why the correct plan changes completely with stack depth.

Shallow, the race is fine. At 20bb effective, calling a shove with 5♠5♦ against a range full of ace-king is straightforward: you put in 20bb to win a pot of roughly 41bb while holding 55%. You do not need implied odds because there are none left to have.

Deep, the race is beside the point. At 150bb the ranges that stack off are tighter and heavier in big pairs, and the value of your fives is in set mining with small pairs rather than in flipping. That shift in plan is the core of how to play small pocket pairs, and getting it backwards is expensive in both directions.

The error most players make is not misjudging the equity. It is calling off 150bb with a hand whose edge is 5% and whose real profit was always somewhere else.

Playing the overcard side

Ace-king is behind every pocket pair in the deck before the flop, deuces included. Against QQ it is about 43/57; against 22 it is still a small dog at roughly 47/53. There is no pair it beats heads-up on raw equity.

That does not make it weak. It makes it a hand that earns its money from fold equity and from dominating the other broadway hands in an opponent's range, not from winning showdowns against pairs. A shove that gets folds most of the time is profitable even though every call is a small loss.

Ace-king also realises its equity better than the pair does once there is a flop. When it hits, it makes top pair with the best kicker, and it knows where it stands. A small pair holding 55% preflop has to fold a large share of flops it never improved on, so the equity it keeps is smaller than the equity it starts with.

Stop calling it a flip

The word flip does real damage, because it tells you the decision does not matter. It does. Getting 200bb into the middle at 55% rather than 50% earns you 10bb every time the spot occurs, and in a tournament those spots occur constantly.

Five points is also enough to flip the sign on a marginal call. A shove you would take at 55% is often one you should decline at 47% — the same physical action, the same board, and a different answer depending on which side of the matchup you hold.

That precision is the whole argument against so-called coin flips in poker. Almost none of them are actually even, and the ones that are get there by accident.
