Poker Coin Flips: Which Races Are Actually 50/50

Most spots players call a flip are 55/45 or worse. AK against queens is 43/57 and a pair against two overcards is 55/45, not an even race.

Almost nothing players call a coin flip is one. A pair against two overcards runs about 55/45, AK against queens is 43/57, and the only common all-in that lands genuinely even is a suited ace-king against a small pair. Collapsing five to fifteen points of equity into the single word "flip" is where the money leaks out.

What players actually mean by a flip

The word gets used for any preflop all-in where both hands can still win — usually two big cards against a pair. It is shorthand for "close enough to even that the decision does not matter." The first half of that is sometimes true. The second half almost never is.

Preflop all-ins fall into four bands, and only one of them lives anywhere near 50/50:

  • Domination. AKo against AQo, roughly 70/30. The dominated hand needs its kicker to be irrelevant, which is rare.
  • Bigger pair over smaller pair. AA against KK, 82/18. Two outs twice, plus back-door help.
  • Pair against two overcards. Somewhere between 52 and 57 for the pair. This is the band everyone calls a flip.
  • Pair against two lower cards. Roughly 80/20. Calling this a race is wishful thinking.

So the whole "flip" category is one band out of four, and inside that band the spread between the best and worst version is about five points of equity.

The real numbers

Every one of these is a spot you will hear described as a flip at the table.

Three things fall out of that table.

The pair is always ahead. In every pair-versus-overcards row the pair wins more often. There is no version of this matchup where the two big cards are favourite, which makes "I'll take a flip with ace-king" a slightly optimistic way of saying "I'll take the worse side."

Suits are worth about three points. AKs against QQ picks up roughly three points over AKo purely from flush equity. Three points sounds trivial until you notice it is more than half the distance between 43/57 and an even race. The details of the AK versus QQ matchup are worth knowing cold, because it is the single most common all-in in tournament poker.

Small pairs race worse than big pairs. QQ is 57% against AKo but 22 is only 53%. The overcards have the same six outs against both, so the difference comes from what happens after the flop, not before it.

Why the pair stays ahead

Two overcards have to improve. The pair only has to survive. That asymmetry is the whole reason a race is not a race.

Unpaired cards pair the flop about a third of the time. The rest of the time AK is holding ace-high and needs the turn or river to save it. Add the straight and flush outs and you land around 43 to 47 per cent — which is exactly where the table says it lands.

The gap between big and small pairs is counterfeiting. QQ beats a board of 9-9-4-4 outright; 22 does not, because both players end up playing the board and the ace kicker takes it. That is why a pair against two overcards is a stronger hold with queens than with deuces even though the raw outs look identical.

The one race that is genuinely even

Suited ace-king against a small pair is the real thing. The pair's counterfeiting problem and the overcards' flush equity cancel each other almost exactly, and the matchup sits within a point of 50/50.

That is worth remembering for a practical reason: it is the ceiling. When you shove AKs and get called by 22, you have found the best possible version of the spot and you are still only breaking even on chips. Every other flip you take is worse than that.

What the missing points cost

Equity gaps look small on paper and large in a stack.

Say you call off 30bb against a 30bb shove with 5bb of blinds already in. The pot at showdown is 65bb. At a true 50% your share is 32.5bb — a 2.5bb profit on the call. At 43% your share is 28bb, which turns the same call into a 2bb loss. The word "flip" moved that decision across the break-even line without you noticing.

Fold equity is worth more than the two or three points you are arguing about. A 20bb shove that gets through half the time is printing money regardless of how the showdowns run, which is why the question at the table is rarely "is this a flip" and almost always "how often does this fold."

Flips and variance

At a genuine 50/50 you lose three in a row one time in eight. At 45% you lose three in a row about one time in six. Neither of those is unusual, and neither tells you anything about whether the decisions were right.

That gap between correct play and short-term results is exactly why players talk themselves into loose all-ins after a bad run and out of good ones after a good one. Understanding how variance actually works is the defence against both.

The useful reframe: you are not trying to win flips. You are trying to take the better side of near-even spots often enough that the edge compounds, and to avoid the ones where you are 43% and calling it 50.

How to play races at the table

  1. Name the actual number, not the category. "AKo against a pair" is 43%. Saying "flip" hides the seven points you are conceding.
  2. Separate shoving from calling. Fold equity changes a 45% hand into a profitable shove. It does nothing for a call.
  3. Check the price before the equity. If the pot is laying you 2:1, 43% is a comfortable call. Getting 1:1 on the same hand is not.
  4. Respect suits. Suited overcards are worth roughly three points, which is often the difference between a call and a fold.
  5. Assume you are behind against a calling range. Anyone flatting a shove has a pair or a better ace far more often than the flip you imagined.
