What Is Set Mining in Poker?

Set mining is calling a preflop raise with a small or medium pocket pair for one purpose: to flop a set and win a large pot. You flop a set or better just under 12% of the time, roughly one flop in eight. The call loses money on its own merits, so it only shows a profit when the stacks behind the raise are deep enough to pay you off on the times you hit.

The maths behind the call

Hold 5♦5♣ against a UTG open and you are behind almost everything that raised. Seven flops out of eight you miss and fold to the first bet. Those folds are the cost of the one flop that changes the session.

Call only when the effective stack behind the raise is at least 15 times the chips you are putting in. Below that, the sets you flop cannot pay for the sets you miss.

The arithmetic is blunt. Calling 3bb eight times costs 24bb, so the one hand that connects has to average more than 24bb in profit to break even — and you will not win a full stack every time, because your opponent misses too and folds to your raise. Fifteen times your call is the floor; twenty is where the spot is genuinely good.

A hand that pays for the misses

You hold 6♠6♥ in the CO with 100bb effective. UTG opens to 3bb and you call. You are risking 3bb with 97bb behind, so the price is right before a card is dealt.

The flop comes K♣6♦2♠. UTG c-bets, you call, and three streets go in by the river. Your set is roughly a 90% favourite against an overpair or top pair, and A♠K♠ on a king-high board is exactly the hand that cannot get away. One pot like this covers the seven you threw away.

When the call stops working

The threshold does all the work, so watch anything that moves it.

• Short stacks. At 40bb effective a 3bb call leaves 37bb behind, barely 12 times your investment, so the pair becomes a three-bet shove or a fold.
• Big raises. Calling an 8bb three-bet with 100bb behind is that same 12 to 1, against a far stronger range.
• Opponents who fold. A player who only continues with the top of their range will never pay a full stack — implied odds are a claim about the person, not just the chips.
• Out of position. You realise less of your equity and cannot take a free card, which quietly raises the stack depth you need.

Multiway pots cut the other way: more callers means more players who might pay you off, so a family pot is where set mining does its best work.

Set mining is easy to make and easy to overuse. Count the stack behind the raise before you count your outs.
