How to Learn GTO Poker in the Right Order
Start with preflop ranges, then flop c-bet frequency, then river bluff ratios. Learning GTO out of order is why most players quit in the first week.

Learn GTO in the order the cards are dealt: preflop ranges, then flop c-betting, then turn and river barrelling, then deliberate exploits. Most players do the opposite — they open a river bluffing video, realise nothing links to anything else they know, and quit inside a week. The order is not a matter of taste. Each stage supplies the assumptions the next stage runs on.
Why the order matters more than the material
GTO is a system of conditional answers. Every postflop solution you will ever read was computed from two specific preflop ranges. Change the range that reaches the flop and every number downstream changes with it.
So a river bluff ratio learned in isolation is not knowledge, it is trivia. You cannot apply it, because applying it requires knowing which hands got to the river, which requires knowing which hands called the turn, and so on back to the first decision of the hand.
The second reason is feedback speed. You make a preflop decision every single hand — hundreds of repetitions an hour. A tough river spot arrives a few times a session. Study the thing you practise most often first and the returns arrive within days rather than months.

The four stages, in order

One rule governs the whole progression, and it is the one worth writing on a sticky note:
Never study a node until you can state the ranges that reach it.
Stage 1: preflop ranges
Start with the seat you play most, not all six at once. For a 6-max regular that means the button and cutoff, which is where the bulk of your profit lives anyway.
Learn opening ranges first. The shape is intuitive once you see it: the BTN opens roughly 40-45% of hands, UTG roughly 15-17%, and every seat in between slots onto that curve. Understanding why — fewer players left to act means less risk of running into a strong hand — is worth more than the individual cells.
Then, in this order:
- Big blind defence against the opens you just learned. You are getting a price with your blind already invested, so the defending range is far wider than instinct suggests.
- 3-betting, first as a linear range in position, then the polarised version out of position.
- Facing 3-bets: which hands 4-bet, which flat, which fold. This is where most of the money is lost by players who have skipped ahead.
Work from solver preflop opening ranges rather than a chart someone reconstructed from memory, and match the format to your game — 6-max, 9-max and heads-up ranges are not interchangeable, and neither are 100bb and 40bb.
That trade is why a simplified version of GTO you can actually recall at the table beats a perfect one you never internalise. Precision is the last thing you add, not the first.
Stage 2: flop c-betting
Once you know which hands reach the flop, flop strategy stops being a list of frequencies and becomes two questions.
Who does this board favour? Compare the two ranges. On A♠7♦2♣ after a BTN open and BB call, the preflop raiser holds every strong ace and the caller holds almost none. That is a range advantage, and it licenses betting small with the entire range.
Who holds the nuts more often? On 9♥8♥7♠ the caller has all the suited connectors and two-pair combinations that the raiser folded preflop. Range advantage is thin and nut advantage is against you, so you check far more than you bet.
Sizing falls out of those answers. Big range advantage with little nut advantage means a small bet with many hands. A polarised nut advantage means a large bet with few. No advantage at all means checking.
Do not memorise per-board frequencies. There are thousands of flops and the two questions above cover all of them.

Stage 3: turns and rivers
Turn and river play is where players expect to start, and where they should arrive third. It rests entirely on the two stages before it.
The defending side is arithmetic. Minimum defence frequency is pot divided by pot plus bet, so against a half-pot bet you continue with about 67% of your range and against a pot-sized bet about 50%. It is a sanity check on your own folding, not a law — against someone who never bluffs, over-folding is correct.
The betting side is selection. On the river your bluff-to-value ratio comes from your own sizing: a pot-sized bet offers 2-to-1, so roughly one bluff for every two value bets. A half-pot bet offers 3-to-1, so one bluff for every three.
Which hands become those bluffs is the skill. Choose the missed draws that block the hands your opponent calls with and unblock the hands they fold. A busted flush draw containing the A♠ on a spade board is a better bluff than the same hand without it, because you hold a card that removes their strongest calls.
How to actually study each stage
Reading solver output builds recognition. Only drilling builds recall, and recall is what you need with a decision clock running.
Structure every session the same way. Guess first, then check. Announcing your answer before revealing the solution turns passive reading into a test, and tests are what create memory.
Twenty focused minutes of GTO practice drills beats two hours of video, because the drill forces a decision on every hand and the video never does. Volume of graded repetitions is the whole mechanism.
Keep a short list of the spots you got wrong and re-drill only those next session. Spaced repetition on your own errors is the fastest route through any stage, and it is the backbone of building a poker study routine that survives past week two.
What stalls people
Studying spots they never play. A 200bb 4-bet pot is fascinating and irrelevant if you play 100bb cash. Drill the stack depth and format you actually sit down in.
Learning all six positions at once. Two seats mastered beats six half-known, because half-known ranges produce hesitation and hesitation produces timing tells.
Memorising outputs instead of reasons. If you know the solver checks a board but not why, you cannot transfer the answer to the next board, and there is always a next board.
Confusing precision with accuracy. Chasing exact mixed frequencies while your blind defence is 15% too tight is polishing the paint on a car with no wheels.
Your first 30 days
- Week 1: BTN and CO opening ranges. Drill daily until you act without hesitating.
- Week 2: BB defence against those two opens, plus SB strategy.
- Week 3: 3-betting in position, and responding to 3-bets when you opened.
- Week 4: Flop c-betting in single-raised pots from the ranges you now know cold.
That is one month to a preflop game that beats most of your table and a flop framework that transfers to every board you will see. Stages 3 and 4 stay open for years, which is fine — you are winning long before they close.
