GTO Poker Simplified: The Ideas That Actually Matter

Simplified GTO is five habits, not a body of mathematics: play ranges rather than hands, let position set how wide you open, use two bet sizes, defend often enough to stop bluffs printing, and balance only where someone is watching. Those five capture most of the expected value a solver would hand you. What remains lives in decimal places that almost nobody at low stakes can exploit. This article is the whole simplification, with the numbers worth carrying to the table.
What GTO really means
Game theory optimal describes a strategy that cannot be beaten by any counter-strategy. Play it perfectly and no opponent, however sharp their reads, can adjust in a way that takes money from you over time.
That definition matters because of what it excludes. GTO does not try to punish bad players; it refuses to be punished. Against someone who folds too often or calls far too much, deliberately unbalanced play earns more. GTO is your baseline — the strategy you fall back on with no read, and the reference point that shows you how far an opponent has strayed.
The full version comes out of a solver: software that plays a spot against itself until neither side can improve. If you have not looked at what a poker solver is under the bonnet, the short version is that it returns a mixed strategy for every hand in every spot — raise some of the time, call some of the time, fold the rest.
Nobody executes that at a table, and nobody needs to. Simplification means rounding those mixes to the nearest single action and accepting a small loss in exchange for a strategy you can run at speed. Assuming you have the basics of how to play poker in place, the five rules below are that rounding.
Rule one: play ranges, not hands
The biggest single jump in skill comes from replacing "what do I have?" with "what does my whole range do here?"
You hold A♠K♠ on Q♠7♦2♣ and consider a continuation bet. The solver is not thinking about your ace-king. It picks a betting frequency across every hand you could hold in that spot, then assigns your specific combination to the group that fits.
Do the same thing manually. Before you act, name three things: the hands you would certainly bet, the hands you would certainly check, and where your actual hand falls. It takes a few seconds and it removes most of the plays that quietly lose money.
- Value bets need a bluff count. If you would bet three streets with QQ+ on a board, you need enough busted draws betting alongside them or your river bets are transparent.
- Checks need strong hands in them. A checking range made entirely of giving-up hands invites an opponent to bet every time you check.
- Calls need a plan for the next street. Calling the flop with a hand that folds to every turn card is worse than folding immediately.
Rule two: let position set how wide you play
Position is the cheapest edge in poker and the one simplification handles best. The later you act, the more hands you can profitably open: fewer players remain to wake up behind you, and you act last on every street afterwards.

Those widths are most of preflop. The exact hands sitting on the margin matter far less than getting the overall shape right — opening 45% from UTG is a serious error, while opening A5s instead of A4s from the CO is worth almost nothing.
A set of solver-built preflop charts gives you the specific combinations for each seat, but the widths above are what you should be able to recall without looking anything up.
Rule three: two bet sizes are enough
A solver uses many sizes because it can. You cannot, so choose two: a small bet of about a third of the pot, and a large one of about three-quarters to full pot. Then pick between them by texture.
- Small on boards that favour your range. Dry, ace-high or king-high flops where you hold far more strong hands than the caller. You bet often and cheaply.
- Large on boards that favour theirs. Connected, low or two-tone flops where the caller has more sets and straights. You bet less often, and for more when you do.
- Overbets are optional. They earn real money on turns and rivers that hit your range hard, but you will not lose much by leaving them out until the rest is automatic.
Sizing errors are forgivable. Frequency errors are not. Betting a third when the solver prefers three-quarters costs a fraction of a big blind; betting into a board where the solver checks your entire range costs several times that, on every repetition.

Rule four: fold less than feels comfortable
The most common leak among players who have read about GTO is over-folding. They learn that good players fold more than fish do, then fold their way past the point where the opponent can bluff with anything at all.
The counterweight is a formula worth memorising:
Minimum defence frequency = pot ÷ (pot + bet)
Against a half-pot bet you must continue with about 67% of your range. Against a pot-sized bet, about 50%. Fold more than that and any opponent who notices can bet every river with any two cards and profit.
Look at it from their side. They bet $50 into a $100 pot, risking $50 to win $100, so the bluff needs to work more than a third of the time. If you fold 80% of your range, it works far more often than that and the money is simply theirs.
Treat minimum defense frequency as a ceiling on how much folding you can afford, not an instruction to call with rubbish. Defend with the hands that have equity or blockers, and count how many you are actually continuing with.
Rule five: balance only where you get punished
Balance — mixing bluffs and value in the right proportion — is the part of GTO discussed most and needed least at small stakes. Imbalance only costs you when someone notices and adjusts, and most opponents never do.
Balance matters when you play the same opponents every session, when the pool is small enough that people take notes, and in the repeated river spots regulars have seen you take a hundred times. Everywhere else, bet your strong hands and your good bluff candidates and stop auditing the ratio.
This is the rule that frees up the most study time. Time spent worrying about whether your river bluffing frequency is exactly right is time not spent fixing an opening range that is 10% too wide from UTG.
What simplification actually costs you
Not every shortcut is priced the same. Some give up almost nothing and some give up your whole edge.

The pattern is clear. Shortcuts on precision are cheap; shortcuts on structure are expensive. Keep the shape of your strategy correct and you can be sloppy about the decimals.
Turning five rules into habits
- Fix preflop first. It applies to every hand, it does not change with the board, and every postflop decision inherits it.
- Learn the defence thresholds. Half pot, two-thirds, full pot. Three numbers cover almost every bet you face.
- Drill one spot until it is automatic. Button versus big blind is the most frequent spot in your database, so start there.
- Check your guesses against a solver. Guess the answer first, then look. The gap between the two is your actual study list.
