What GTO actually promises
Game theory optimal means unexploitable. Play it perfectly and nobody — not a bot, not a world champion — can hold an edge on you. What it does not promise is the largest possible win rate.
Against a table that folds too rarely, unexploitable is a low ceiling. The solver bluffs the river at the frequency that leaves your opponent indifferent between calling and folding. Your 1/2 opponent is not indifferent. He calls. Every river bluff you fire at the theoretically correct frequency is money a pure value-betting strategy would have kept in your stack.
So the honest answer depends entirely on who is sitting in the other seats. The full trade-off is worth reading in GTO against exploitative play, but the short version is that balance protects you and exploitation pays you.
Where the money actually is at 1/2
Three tendencies show up at nearly every small-stakes table, and none of them need solver output to attack.
- They do not fold to river bets. Bluff less, value bet thinner and larger, and stop trying to move them off top pair.
- They limp and then call raises. Isolating limpers from the CO and BTN with a wide range is close to free money, and it is a spot solvers barely model because limping is not part of their baseline.
- They play too passively after the flop. Their raises mean strength, so folding second pair to a turn raise costs you almost nothing.
The adjustments are blunt, and all of them are worth more at live 1/2 cash games than any river frequency you could memorise.

Why you still need the baseline
An exploit is a deviation. Deviate from nothing and you are not exploiting anyone, you are guessing.
You cannot know what an adjustment is worth until you know what the unadjusted play was worth.
Here is the concrete version. You start folding the big blind against button opens because the table feels aggressive. Against a 2.5x open you risk 1.5bb to win 4bb, so you need well under 30% equity, and almost nothing is that bad against a button that opens 40-45% of hands. Without the baseline, over-folding feels like discipline. With it, you can see a leak that bleeds a fraction of a big blind every orbit.
Learn preflop first
Preflop is the one part of theory that transfers almost unchanged to a soft table. Ranges do not care whether your opponent is a station: a hand that loses money opened from UTG loses money regardless of who calls.
It is also finite. Six seats, one or two stack depths, opens, 3-bets and cold calls. You can absorb the structure in a few weeks and it stays correct for the rest of your career, whereas postflop theory is effectively bottomless.

Two tweaks make them small-stakes ready. Open a touch tighter from UTG and HJ when the table calls wide, because you will see more multiway flops than the chart assumes. And shift your 3-betting towards value — hands like QQ and AKo want a bigger pot, while a 3-bet bluff against someone who never folds is just building a pot out of position.

What to skip for now
- Mixed strategies. A hand the solver splits between raising and calling is a hand where both options are worth almost exactly the same. Pick one, play it every time, and move on.
- Exact bet-size trees. Two sizes per street, small and large, capture most of the available EV.
- MDF to the decimal. Knowing that a half-pot bet asks you to defend about 67% is useful. Solving for the exact combo is not.
- Custom solves and node-locking. Powerful tools, and useless until you know which spot to look at.
None of that list is the constraint on your win rate at 1/2. The constraint is playing too many hands, calling too wide out of position and paying off obvious value bets. Fix those with a straightforward micro stakes strategy before you spend an evening on river frequencies.
When GTO starts to matter
Balance earns money the moment your opponents start noticing you. Three signals tell you that you have arrived.
- Your exploits stop working. You isolate a limper and get 3-bet. You value bet thin and get raised.
- You are being attacked in position. Regulars 3-bet your late-position opens light because your response is predictable.
- You cannot explain your own default. If every decision is a read and none of them is a baseline, your strategy has no floor.
At that point the ordering flips. Theory becomes the thing you fall back on against unknowns, and exploitation becomes a deliberate departure you can price.
A study plan that fits around a job
- Drill preflop until it is automatic. Twenty minutes a session, one position at a time.
- Review three hands a week, not thirty. Pick the biggest pot, the worst river call and one spot you genuinely did not understand.
- Guess before you check. Write down your answer and the reason, then compare. The gap between your guess and the baseline is the lesson.
- Track one adjustment at a time. Bluff less on rivers for a month and see what happens to your win rate before changing anything else.
The question was never GTO or exploitation. It is how much theory you need before your reads have something to push against — and at small stakes, that is solid preflop ranges, a handful of postflop principles, and the discipline to bet your good hands for more.
