What Does Air Mean in Poker?
Air has no pair, draw or showdown value. It is a natural bluffing hand, but the board still decides which missed hands are worth firing.
Air is a hand with no pair, no draw, and no showdown value — a holding that can only win the pot if everyone else folds. On a K♠8♦4♥ flop, Q♣7♣ is air: it beats nothing that would call a bet, and it has no draw to get better. A busted flush draw on the river is air too.
What air looks like at the table
You open the BTN to $6 in a $1/$2 game with Q♣7♣, the BB calls, and the flop comes K♠8♦4♥. There is $13 in the middle and you hold nothing.
Air is not simply a weak hand. What matters is whether it can win without betting.

Why air makes the best bluff
Bluffing costs you nothing when the hand cannot win a showdown anyway. Betting $6 into $13 risks $6 to win $13, so it needs to work about 32% of the time to break even, and every fold you collect with Q♣7♣ is profit you had no other route to.
The leak runs the other way. Betting 6♥6♠ there turns a hand that beats every missed AQ and QJ into a bet that only gets called by better — you spend $6 to fold out the hands you were beating.

Choosing which airballs to fire
Air is not uniform. Q♠7♠ and Q♣7♣ are identical on that flop and completely different by the river: the suited one picks up a flush draw on any spade turn and can keep firing. Fire the airball with a future.
Board texture settles the rest. A K-high rainbow flop hits your BTN opening range far harder than the BB's calling range, so the story holds. A 8♥7♥6♦ flop does the reverse, and barrelling air into it burns money.
