What Is Fold Equity in Poker?

Fold equity is the value you gain from the chance your opponent folds. Learn the formula and why semi-bluffing with a draw prints money.

Fold equity is the value a bet earns from the chance your opponent folds, separate from any value your cards earn at showdown. Every bet has two ways to profit: it takes the pot immediately when they give up, and it wins a larger pot later when they call and your hand gets there. Fold equity is the first of those, and it is the reason a hand with no pair and no showdown value can still be a profitable bet.

How fold equity works

Put a number on it before you decide anything. A bet risks your own chips to win what is already in the middle, so the break-even folding frequency is just the price you are laying yourself.

A pure bluff breaks even when it wins the pot bet / (bet + pot) of the time. Whatever equity you keep when called is profit on top of that.

Bet $50 into a $150 pot and you risk $50 to win $150, so you need a fold about 25% of the time. That threshold climbs with your sizing, which is why big bluffs demand far more from your opponent's fold button than small ones do.

A hand where it prints

You open the CO with 9♠8♠ and the BB calls. The flop comes A♠7♦2♠, giving you a flush draw and nothing else, with $60 in the middle.

Bet $45 and the bet needs folds roughly 43% of the time to break even on its own. The BB holds plenty of ace-high and small pairs that will continue, so assume the folds arrive rather less often than that. The bet is still not a loser, because the hands that call you are not up against a hand drawing dead.

A flush draw gets there around 35% of the time by the river with two cards to come. That equity covers the shortfall: fold equity and pot equity together clear a bar that neither clears alone. That combination is exactly what a semi-bluff is.

When fold equity vanishes

The whole calculation collapses when folds stop arriving, and it collapses quietly.

  • Calling stations. A player who never folds top pair gives you nothing to buy. Against them, bet the draw for value on the turn instead of bluffing the flop.
  • Short stacks. An opponent with 12bb who already has 4bb in the pot is priced in and calling regardless of what you represent.
  • Multiway pots. Three opponents who each fold 60% of the time all fold together only about 22% of the time.
  • Boards that smash their range. On Q♥J♥T♦ against a BB caller, your defence against the call is thin and their continuing range is enormous.

Putting it to work

Work out both numbers before you fire: how often they fold, and how often you win when they do not. A poker equity calculator settles the second one in seconds, and the first is a read that sharpens every session you play.

The habit worth building is refusing to bluff without at least one of them. A draw with no fold equity is a call, and a bluff with neither equity nor folds is 2.5bb donated. Fold equity is what turns aggression from a personality trait into arithmetic.
