River Decision Making Made Simple
By the river no cards are left to come, so only two questions matter: how often your opponent bluffs, and which of those bluffs your hand blocks.

By the river there are no cards left to come, no equity to realise and no draws to protect. Your hand is exactly as strong as it will ever be, which collapses every river decision into two questions: how much of your opponent's betting range is bluffing, and which of those bluffs does your own hand block? Answer both roughly and the price on the table tells you what to do.
What actually changes on the river
Flop and turn decisions are messy because they carry the future with them. You weigh equity, implied odds, protection, fold equity and position all at once, and each of those pulls in a slightly different direction.
The river deletes all of it. Your hand either beats the hands your opponent is betting or it does not. There is no card to hit, nothing to protect, and no later street where your fold equity gets a second run.
That simplification is the reason rivers are the most solvable street and also the most expensive one. Pots are at their largest, ranges are at their narrowest, and one wrong call at 100bb deep can cost more than an entire session of flop errors.
Three things follow from having no cards to come.
- Equity is binary. You have 100% or 0%. Your call is not about your hand improving; it is about how often you are already ahead.
- The only variable is their range. Every river decision is an estimate of the split between value and bluffs in the hands your opponent is prepared to bet.
- Blockers stop being a tiebreaker. With ranges this narrow, removing two combinations from a fourteen-combination betting range moves the answer by a meaningful amount.
Start with the price, never with your hand
Work out what the bet costs you before you look at your cards again. Doing it in the other order invites you to find the number that justifies the decision you already wanted.
The price is the bet divided by the final pot after your call. Someone bets $60 into a $120 pot: you risk $60 to win $180, so you need to be good more than 25% of the time.

The right-hand column is minimum defence frequency, and it is the number most players quietly ignore. Against a pot-sized river bet you are allowed to fold half your range and no more, or your opponent can bet every river with any two cards and profit.
On the river you are not calling with equity. You are calling with the share of your opponent's range that is bluffing — call when the bluffs beat the price.

Count the bluffs in combinations
The estimate that decides the hand is how many bluffs your opponent actually holds. Do it by counting combinations, not by reading their timing.
Say the board runs out K♠9♦4♣7♥2♠ and your opponent barrels three streets. Ask what they were betting the flop and turn with that now has nothing.
- Missed draws. On this run-out there are almost none — no flush draw completed or died, and the straight draws are thin. Their bluffing candidates are scarce.
- Give-ups. Hands like A♥Q♥ that fired the flop often check back rather than fire a third barrel, so they leave the betting range entirely.
- Value hands. Every K, plus 99, 44 and 77, all comfortably bet three streets.
That count is the whole answer. A dry board with no busted draws leaves your opponent short of natural bluffs and heavy with value, so a large river bet there deserves a big hero fold far more often than it deserves a curious call.
Change one card and the count inverts. On K♠9♠4♣7♠2♦ every missed spade draw arrives at the river as a hand that cannot win at showdown and can only win by betting. Now the bluffs are plentiful, and the same big bet is a call with a hand as weak as second pair.
Blockers decide the close ones
Once you have counted, your own two cards edit the count. A blocker is any card you hold that removes combinations from your opponent's range.
The rule is easier than it sounds: you want to block their value and unblock their bluffs.
On that three-spade board, holding the A♠ removes every nut-flush combination they could be value-betting. Your K♦K♣ was a bluff catcher a moment ago; with the A♠ in your hand, a large chunk of the hands that beat you no longer exist and the call gets much better.
The reverse is just as real. If your hand contains the exact cards their missed draws need — say you hold the J♥T♥ on a board where J-T was the obvious busted draw — you have removed their bluffs. The same nominal hand strength is now a worse call, because the range betting into you skews towards value.
This is why two players can hold hands of identical strength and be correct to make opposite decisions. Most genuine bluff catching spots are close enough that blockers, not hand strength, break the tie.

When you are the one betting
Everything above runs backwards when the bet is yours. A river bluff needs to work bet divided by bet-plus-pot of the time: a half-pot bluff needs a fold 25% of the time, a pot-sized bluff 50%.
Choose the bluff itself by the same blocker logic in reverse. The best river bluff is a hand with no showdown value that blocks the hands your opponent would call with, and does not block the hands they would fold.
Bluff with the hands that cannot win otherwise. A busted straight draw is a far better bluff than a small pair. The small pair beats their own busted draws at showdown, so betting it turns a winner into a loser.
Size to the range you are attacking. Against a capped range with lots of medium pairs, a large bet or an overbet folds out hands that a half-pot bet would price in. Against a range that is either very strong or nothing, a small bet collects the same folds for a third of the risk.

A river hand, start to finish
You hold A♦J♦ on the BTN. The board is Q♦8♦4♠2♥5♣ and your flush never came. The pot is $200 and the BB, who checked and called the flop and turn, leads out for $150 into you.
Work it in order. The price is $150 to win $350, so you need to be good 30% of the time and may fold about 57% of your range.
Now count. A check-call, check-call, then lead is rarely a hand that wanted to check twice — it is either a slowplayed two pair or a busted draw taking one last shot. Missed diamonds are the obvious bluff group, and your A♦ removes several of them.
Your ace-high beats every bluff and loses to every value hand, so this is a pure count problem. Your blocker cuts their bluffs, the lead is large, and their line skews to value — this is a fold, and knowing why is worth more than the $150.
Making river decisions automatic
Do the same four steps every time, in the same order, until they stop feeling like steps.
- Price first. Bet over final pot. Say the number out loud before you look at your hand again.
- Count their bluffs. What did they bet earlier that now cannot win at showdown? On dry run-outs the answer is often almost nothing.
- Apply your blockers. Do you remove their value or their bluffs? That is usually the tiebreaker on close spots.
- Compare, then act. Bluff combinations above the price is a call, below it is a fold, and there is no third option.
Review the close ones away from the table. Turning a hand into explicit expected value calculations once or twice a week rewires your instinct faster than any amount of playing, because the river is the one street where the maths is clean enough to check yourself against.
