Pot Odds Explained: The Most Important Poker Concept
Pot odds are the price you are being offered. How to work them out in seconds, compare them against your equity, and stop making losing calls.

If you learn exactly one piece of poker mathematics, learn this one. Pot odds decide whether every call you ever make is profitable, and the calculation takes about three seconds once the pattern is familiar. Players who skip it lose money slowly and continuously, in a way that never shows up as a single memorable mistake.
The core idea
Pot odds are the price you are being offered.
Someone bets $50 into a $100 pot. To call, you risk $50 to win $150 — the original pot plus their bet. The final pot after your call would be $200, of which your $50 is a quarter.
So you need to win more than 25% of the time for the call to be profitable. That is the entire concept.
The formula, in the form worth memorising:
Equity needed = bet ÷ (pot + bet + your call)
Everything else in this article is either a shortcut for computing that number faster, or an adjustment for money that is not yet in the pot.
The prices worth knowing by heart
Most bets are one of about six sizes. Learning what each one demands removes the arithmetic from the table entirely:

Three observations that pay for themselves.
Small bets need very little. A quarter-pot bet asks you to be right one time in six. Against those, folding a hand with any equity at all is usually the error, not calling.
Big bets need much less than they feel like. A pot-sized bet — which feels enormous — only requires 33%. An open-ended straight draw on the flop has more than that if you will see both cards.
The curve flattens fast. Going from a pot-sized bet to a double-pot bet only raises the requirement from 33% to 40%. Overbets are not nearly as punishing to call as their size suggests, which is exactly why good players use them.
Comparing against your equity
Pot odds alone decide nothing. They are one half of a comparison:
Call when your equity is greater than the equity the price demands.
You need both numbers. Getting the price right and guessing the equity is no better than the reverse.
The fast estimate for equity is the rule of 2 and 4: multiply your outs by two for one card, by four for two. Nine flush outs is about 18% on the next card, and about 36% across the turn and river.
Run the comparison on a real spot. You have a flush draw on the flop, and your opponent bets half pot.
- Price: half pot means you need 25%.
- Equity: nine outs is about 18% for the next card.
- Verdict: on raw pot odds, this call is short.
That answer surprises people, because "always call with a flush draw" is folklore. It is short because you only get one card for that price. If the bet were on the turn and you were all-in — seeing both remaining cards for a single payment — your 36% would beat the 25% price comfortably.

Implied odds
Pot odds only count the money already in the pot. Often the reason to call is money that is not there yet.
Implied odds are the additional amount you expect to win on later streets when your draw arrives. That gutshot needing 20% but only holding 17% becomes a fine call if hitting it wins you another full pot from an opponent who cannot fold a good hand.
Implied odds are real, and they are also the single most abused idea in poker. Three conditions have to hold before you may count on them:
- Stacks must be deep enough. If the effective stack is one pot-sized bet, there is nothing left to imply.
- Your hand must be well disguised. A completed flush on a three-suited board is obvious to everyone; a small set on a dry board is not. Hidden hands collect; visible ones do not.
- Your opponent must be capable of paying. Against someone who folds to any river aggression, your implied odds are zero no matter how deep the stacks are.
When all three hold, implied odds can justify a call needing five or six per cent more equity than the raw price. When they do not, invoking them is just a story you are telling yourself to avoid folding.
Reverse implied odds
The mirror image, and the one nobody accounts for.
Reverse implied odds are the money you lose on later streets when you hit your hand and are still behind. The classic case is a weak flush draw: the card that completes your flush is the same card that completes a better flush for anyone holding two higher cards of that suit. You hit, you bet, you get raised, and you pay.
Hands with bad reverse implied odds:
- Low flush draws on boards where a higher flush is very possible
- The low end of a straight draw, where the same card makes a higher straight
- Weak top pair against a range that only continues with better
Hands with good reverse implied odds are the ones that are either the nuts when they arrive or easy to abandon: nut flush draws, open-enders on the high end, sets.
The practical adjustment is simple. Subtract a few points of equity from any draw that can arrive second-best. It will not always change the decision, but the decisions it does change are the expensive ones.
Pot odds from the other side
The same arithmetic run backwards tells you how often a bluff needs to work.
Bet $50 into a $100 pot as a pure bluff. You risk $50 to win $100, so you need it to work more than a third of the time — bet divided by bet plus pot. A half-pot bluff needs to succeed 25% of the time; a pot-sized bluff, 50%.
This is why small bluffs are so much more forgiving than large ones, and why the reflex to shove all-in as a bluff is usually wrong. The bigger the bluff, the more often it must work, and beyond a certain size no realistic fold frequency justifies it.
From the defender's side, the same relationship produces minimum defence frequency: the share of your range you must continue with to stop an opponent bluffing profitably with any two cards. It equals pot divided by pot plus bet — about 67% against a half-pot bet, 50% against a pot-sized one.
Minimum defence frequency is a useful sanity check, not a law. Against an opponent who never bluffs, folding everything is correct however exploitable it looks in theory.
Where it earns its keep is as a check on your own instincts. If you fold 80% of your range to a half-pot river bet, you are folding well past the threshold, and any opponent who noticed could bet every river with any two cards and print money. Most players at low stakes are nowhere near exploiting that — but the same calculation tells you that your own small river bets are more profitable than they feel, because your opponents are over-folding too.
Where pot odds decide the whole strategy
The place pot odds matter most is not a dramatic river call. It is the big blind, every orbit.
When you are in the big blind and someone raises, your blind is already in the pot. Against a 2.5x button open you are typically calling one and a half big blinds into a pot of four, so you need well under 30% equity. Very few hands are that bad against a button's opening range — which is why correct big blind defence looks so loose, and why folding it too often is one of the most expensive habits in low-stakes poker.
The preflop opening ranges for each seat show what you are actually up against, which is the other half of that decision. A wide button range and a good price is a call; a tight under-the-gun range and the same price is not.
Making it automatic
- Learn the price table. Six numbers, and the arithmetic disappears from the table permanently.
- Ask "one card or two?" before anything else. It halves or doubles your equity and it is the most frequently skipped step.
- Compute the price before you estimate your equity. Doing it the other way round invites you to talk yourself into the number you wanted.
- Adjust for implied and reverse implied odds last, and only with a specific reason.
