Equity is the number underneath every decision in poker. Whether a call is profitable, whether a bluff can work, whether a draw is worth chasing — all of it reduces to comparing your equity against a price. Yet most players estimate it with a rule of thumb they half-remember and never check.
This is how equity is actually computed, how to estimate it accurately in the seconds you have at the table, and where the standard shortcut quietly fails.
What equity means
Your equity is your share of the pot if the hand were played to showdown from right now, with every possible remaining runout weighted by how often it happens.
If you hold 60% equity in a $100 pot, then $60 of that pot is yours in expectation. You will not win 60% of the pot in any single hand — you will win all of it or none of it — but across every possible way the cards can fall, that is your share.
Two consequences follow immediately, and both matter:
Equity is always relative to something. "I have 35% equity" is meaningless until you say against what. Against a single specific hand it is one number; against the range of hands your opponent could actually hold it is usually a very different one.
Equity is not the same as whether you should call. Equity tells you how often you win. Pot odds tell you how often you need to win. The decision comes from comparing the two, which is pot odds explained in full rather than an equity question.
Counting outs
The fastest way to a usable number is to count outs — the cards that turn a losing hand into a winning one.
The standard counts, assuming your draw is good when it hits:
- Flush draw — 9 outs (13 cards of the suit, minus the 4 you can see)
- Open-ended straight draw — 8 outs
- Gutshot straight draw — 4 outs
- Two overcards — 6 outs
- Set to full house or quads on the turn — 7 outs
- Pair to trips — 2 outs
- Flush draw plus open-ender — 15 outs
Two disciplines make out-counting reliable.
Do not count outs that do not win. A flush draw on a paired board is not nine clean outs, because some of those runouts give an opponent a full house. Counting the card that makes your hand while ignoring the hand it makes for someone else is the most common way an out count is inflated.
Count partial outs. An overcard that pairs may only win half the time it arrives. Counting it as half an out is more accurate than counting it fully or not at all.

The rule of 2 and 4
The standard shortcut, and the one worth having automatic:
- Outs x 2 = roughly your chance of hitting on the next card
- Outs x 4 = roughly your chance of hitting across the turn and river together
A flush draw on the flop: 9 outs, so about 18% by the turn and about 36% by the river. The exact figures are 19.1% and 35.0%, which is close enough for any decision you will make at a table.
Where it comes from is straightforward. After the flop there are 47 unseen cards, so each out is worth about 2.1% — hence multiplying by two. Across two cards you get roughly twice as many chances, hence four.
When the rule of 4 breaks
Two failure modes, and both cost real money.
Large out counts. Above about twelve outs, multiplying by four overstates your equity noticeably. With 15 outs the rule says 60%; the true figure is about 54%. The rule double-counts the runouts where both cards would have hit. For big draws, a better approximation is outs x 4 - (outs - 8).
Facing more betting. The rule of 4 assumes you get to see both remaining cards. That is only true if you are all-in, or you are confident there will be no turn bet. If you call the flop and then face another bet on the turn, you were never getting two cards for one price — use the rule of 2 for each street separately.
This distinction is where most bad draw calls originate. Players compute their equity as though they will see the river, then fold to a turn bet, having paid for a card they never used.

Hand versus range
Out counting works when you know what you are up against. You never do.
The honest version of the question is not "what is my equity against A-K" but "what is my equity against everything they would play this way". Answering it means computing your equity against every hand in that range and averaging, weighted by the number of combinations of each.
This changes numbers substantially. A hand that is a 30% underdog against the top of an opponent's range might be a 55% favourite against the range as a whole, because most of that range is hands they would also bet without a real holding.
Doing this by hand is impractical beyond a handful of combinations. A poker equity calculator does it directly: enter your hand, enter the range you are putting them on, add the board, and read off the answer.
How a calculator actually works
Two methods, and knowing which one produced your number tells you how much to trust it.
Exact enumeration. With few enough unknown cards, the calculator simply plays out every possible runout and counts. On the turn with two known hands there are 44 possible rivers, so it evaluates 44 outcomes and the result is exactly right — no sampling error at all. Flop with two known hands is 990 runouts, also trivial.
Monte Carlo simulation. Preflop against a wide range, the space is too large to enumerate quickly, so the calculator samples random runouts and reports the proportion won. With a hundred thousand samples the answer is accurate to a fraction of a percentage point, which is far finer than any decision requires.
A good calculator tells you which one you got. The distinction matters when a number looks surprising: an exact result is exact, and a simulated result carries a small margin.
Card removal and blockers
The subtlety that separates careful equity work from sloppy equity work.
Every card you can see is a card your opponent cannot hold. Holding the ace of spades on a three-spade board means they cannot have the nut flush — a real, quantifiable reduction in their strong combinations, not a superstition.
The effects are larger than intuition suggests. Holding one ace cuts the combinations of A-A they can hold from 6 to 3, and the combinations of A-K from 16 to 12. Removing half of someone's strongest hand from their range meaningfully changes what a call is worth.
Any calculator worth using removes known cards from every range before computing. If yours does not, its answers against ranges are systematically wrong.
Working through a hand
You hold 9-8 of hearts. The flop is K-7-2 with two hearts. Your opponent bets $50 into a $100 pot.
Count the outs. Nine hearts for the flush, plus a 6 or a 10 for a gutshot — but the 6 and 10 of hearts are already counted. So nine flush outs plus six straight outs, twelve in total, minus a small discount for the times the flush loses to a bigger flush. Call it eleven and a half.
Estimate the equity. Roughly 23% to hit on the turn. Do not use the rule of 4 here: you are facing a bet with more betting to come.
Compare with the price. You are risking $50 to win $150, so you need 25%. On raw equity this is marginally short.
Adjust for what happens next. You will sometimes win by hitting and getting paid on later streets, and sometimes by bluffing when the flush card arrives and you missed. That structure — outs, equity, price, adjustments — is the whole procedure, and it works on every street of every hand.
Building the skill
Three habits move equity estimation from arithmetic you perform to a number you simply see:
- Memorise the common ones. Flush draw 36% by the river, open-ender 32%, gutshot 17%, pair versus two overcards 55%, two overcards versus a pair 45%. Perhaps a dozen numbers cover most spots you will face.
- Review hands with a calculator afterwards. Guess first, then check. The gap between your guess and the answer is the lesson, and it closes quickly.
- Practise ranges, not hands. Real decisions are against ranges, so studying hand-versus-hand equity trains the wrong reflex.
