PKO Bounty Strategy: Pricing a Knockout Correctly
In a progressive knockout a bounty can be worth more than the pot, turning marginal folds into calls. How to price one and who to target.

A bounty is prize money paid for eliminating a player, and in a progressive knockout it is regularly worth more than the chips in the middle. That changes the arithmetic of every all-in: you are pricing your call against the pot plus a cash prize you collect only when you cover your opponent and win the hand. Get the price right and hands that are clear folds in a regular tournament become clear calls. Get it lazily wrong, which is the norm, and you fire off stacks chasing $12.
What a progressive bounty actually pays
In a standard knockout the whole bounty is paid in cash the moment you win the hand. In a progressive knockout the prize splits: about half comes to you immediately, and the other half is added to the bounty sitting on your own head.
Take a $100 PKO where $50 goes to the prize pool and $50 to your bounty. Eliminate a starting stack and you bank $25 in cash, and your own bounty rises from $50 to $75. Whoever busts you later collects half of that.
The two halves are not worth the same. The cash half is banked and cannot be taken back. The half added to your head is worth face value only if you never bust, which you usually do, so discount it. Counting a full bounty at face value is the most common pricing error in the format and it makes you call far too wide.

Turning a bounty into chips
Dollars and chips cannot be compared until they share a unit. The conversion is arithmetic, not judgement:
Bounty in chips = the cash value of the bounty divided by the prize-pool value of one chip.
Early on that second number is easy. If the prize-pool half of a $100 buy-in is $50 and you start with 25,000 chips, each chip is worth $0.002. A $50 bounty therefore converts to 25,000 chips — an entire starting stack.
That is the fact to internalise. At the start of a 50/50 PKO, a player's head is worth as much as everything in front of them. Chip value is not perfectly linear, and ICM makes later chips worth less than early ones, but the approximation is close enough to play by.
The ratio then only gets more extreme, because bounties stay fixed while stacks shrink. A player down to 10bb still carries the bounty they started with, now worth many times the chips they are shoving.
Equity needed = your risk ÷ (your risk + pot + bounty in chips)
The call this changes
Work a real spot. The BTN shoves 10bb, you are in the BB covering them, no antes. The pot is 11.5bb — their 10bb, the SB's 0.5bb and your own dead 1bb — and calling costs you 9bb more.

With no bounty you need 43.9%, which folds most of the hands you would like to defend. With the bounty worth 8bb you need 31.6%, and J8o, Q7o and 53s all clear that against a button shoving range while failing badly against 43.9%.
Notice what the curve does. The first few big blinds of bounty value move the requirement a long way; the last few move it much less. You do not need a precise bounty valuation to play well, you need to be in the right band.
Who to target
The bounty is only available to a player who covers. That single rule drives most PKO adjustments.
Widen against players you cover. Every chip of their stack you can win comes with a prize attached. This is the main source of edge in the format and most players still underuse it.
Tighten against players who cover you. You collect nothing when you win, and you are the prize when you lose. Playing both directions the same way is how good regular-MTT players lose in PKOs.
Prefer the shortest covered stack. What matters is bounty per chip risked, not the size of the bounty. An 8bb stack with a $50 head is a far better target than a 40bb stack with the same $50, because you buy the same prize for a fifth of the risk.
Being short in this format is genuinely miserable for the reasons set out in short stack tournament play: everyone behind you is priced in to call, so your fold equity collapses exactly when you need it most.

Preflop adjustments that pay
The adjustment is asymmetric, and this is where most players get it backwards. Your calling range widens dramatically when you cover a shover. Your own shoving range widens much less, because you gain nothing from your own bounty and everyone behind you is looking for an excuse to call.
Start from shoving ranges by stack depth and stretch the calling side while leaving the shoving side close to standard.
Hand selection shifts too. A bounty rewards raw showdown equity against wide ranges, which is exactly what all-in pots produce:
- Small and medium pairs gain the most. They are coin flips against almost everything and they never need to improve.
- Ax and Kx gain a lot. Blockers, plus decent equity against the trash a short stack shoves.
- Suited connectors gain the least. Their value comes from postflop playability and implied odds, and neither exists in a preflop all-in.

Multiway pots and the overlay
The bounty goes to one player only, and that player must win the pot outright. Beating the short stack while losing the main pot to someone else earns you nothing.
So your share of the bounty is discounted by your probability of winning the entire hand, not by your equity against the all-in player alone. In a three-handed all-in your headline equity might be 40%, which is fine, but your bounty share is worth 40% of the prize rather than the whole thing.
The practical consequence is that raises which isolate gain value. When a 9bb stack shoves in front of you and two players are still to act, a call invites company; a raise that puts the rest of the table off buys you the knockout equity for yourself. Sizing up to fold out the field is often worth more than the extra chips you risk.
When ICM pulls the other way
Bounties push you towards calling. ICM pushes you towards folding. In a PKO both are live at once, and which one wins depends on when you are playing.
Early and through the middle stages the bounty dominates. Pay jumps are trivial, your stack is not close to a ladder step, and a knockout is real money in hand today.
Near the money and at the final table, pay jumps get steep and every remaining bounty has grown. Two large forces pointing in opposite directions is exactly the situation where instinct fails, so run the spot through an ICM calculator for tournaments afterwards and see which side actually won.
One structural point works in your favour: because half of every buy-in goes to bounties, the prize pool is half the size and the pay jumps are correspondingly shallower. ICM pressure in a PKO is real but weaker than in a regular tournament of the same buy-in.
The mistakes that cost most
- Valuing the full bounty at face value. Only the cash half is certain. Discount the half that goes on your head.
- Calling wide against a covering stack. You cannot win a prize you are carrying.
- Chasing the biggest bounty. Bounty per chip risked is the number that matters, not the headline figure.
- Flatting instead of isolating. Extra players in the pot cut your knockout equity without cutting anyone else's.
- Ignoring ICM at the final table. The bounty does not stop mattering, but neither do the pay jumps.
Price the knockout, check who covers whom, and get the pot heads-up. Three habits, and they cover most of the money in the format.

Can you win a bounty if you are the short stack?
No. Only a player who covers the eliminated player can collect their bounty, and they must win the pot outright. If everyone at your table covers you, the bounty on your own head is a prize you are carrying for other people, so you should be tightening rather than widening.
Does ICM still matter in a progressive knockout?
Yes, but it pulls against the bounty. Half of every buy-in goes to bounties instead of the prize pool, so pay jumps in a PKO are shallower than in a regular tournament of the same buy-in and ICM pressure is genuinely weaker. On a final table with big remaining bounties both forces are large enough that you should calculate rather than guess.
