Pay Jump Strategy: When a Ladder Beats a Coinflip

The jump from fifth to fourth can be worth more than the chips you risk to get there. How to price a pay jump before you call an all-in.

A pay jump is the money between two finishing positions, and at a final table it is routinely worth more than the chips you would risk to win it. If fifth pays $4,000 and fourth pays $5,600, that $1,600 belongs to every player still alive — including the ones folding while you race. Calling an all-in for a near coinflip is often break-even in chips and clearly losing in dollars. Pricing the jump before you call is the largest single edge available in tournament poker.

Chips are not dollars

Every tournament payout structure is top-heavy, and that flattens the value of chips as you stack them up. The first 20 big blinds in front of you are worth far more than the twentieth to fortieth, because the first ones keep you alive and the later ones only sharpen your shot at a prize you already partly own.

Doubling your stack never doubles your prize equity. Busting takes all of it. That asymmetry is the reason a chip-neutral flip is a genuine loss in money.

The chips you win are worth less than the chips you lose. Every adjustment in this article follows from that one sentence.

The model that attaches numbers to it is the Independent Chip Model, and how ICM prices a pay jump works through the calculation properly. You never need to run it mid-hand. You need to know how much it tightens you, and when.

What a pay jump is actually worth

Take a $50,000 prize pool paying five places:

Two things stand out. The jumps grow as players leave, so patience compounds — every rung of the ladder pays better than the last. And fifth place still collects 71% of fourth-place money, which means the marginal reward for surviving one more spot is modest next to the 100% of your equity you forfeit by busting.

That is why the correct calling range five-handed is dramatically tighter than the same hand, stacks and blinds nine-handed. Nothing about the cards changed. The price of being wrong did.

Pricing a flip before you call

Five left, blinds 10,000/20,000 with a 20,000 big blind ante. Stacks:

  • You (BB): 620,000
  • BTN: 580,000
  • CO: 360,000
  • SB: 240,000
  • UTG: 200,000

The CO shoves for 18bb. You look down at AKo.

Against a shove that wide you are in good shape. You dominate the weaker aces, you crush the suited connectors, and against the pairs you are close to a flip — AKo runs a shade under 50% against 22. Averaged out, the call is mildly profitable in chips.

In money it is a loser. Two stacks behind you are shorter than the shover, both are paying a full ante and blind cycle every five hands, and either could easily be gone before you face another decision this awkward. You are risking 360,000 to win 360,000, where losing leaves you scraping at 260,000 and fourth-place money, and winning gives you a commanding stack you did not need to have.

Fold, and the short stacks keep playing for their lives while you keep yours. The whole of final table strategy under ICM is built on repeating that trade a dozen times an hour.

When you should take the flip

ICM tightens your calls. It does not forbid them. Race when one of these is true:

  • You cover the whole table and the shover is second in chips. Busting them removes the only player who can end your tournament and collects a jump on the spot.
  • You are the short stack. At 8bb your prize equity is already close to the min-cash and you have almost no fold equity left to protect. Blinding out costs more than racing.
  • Your edge is not thin. AA against a shoving range is not a coinflip, it is a 4-to-1 favourite over any single pair — AA holds up against KK about 82% of the time. ICM taxes thin edges hardest and barely touches large ones.
  • The remaining jumps are small. A structure paying $4,000 and $4,300 for fifth and fourth punishes a bust far less than one that pays $4,000 and $8,000.

Use the pressure, do not just absorb it

If ICM stops you calling, it stops your opponents too — and that is worth money to whoever notices first.

When you cover a middle stack, your open-shoves and 3-bet jams get through far more often than raw hand strength justifies. The player with 25bb and two shorties behind him is not calling off with AJo or 99 for his tournament life. So attack him relentlessly from the BTN and SB, with hands that never open from those seats in a cash game.

The same logic tells you who to leave alone. A 6bb stack has no fold equity to preserve and calls very wide, so stealing his blind with 84o is a losing play. Steal from the trapped, not the desperate.

Every big blind you pick up without a showdown moves you up the ladder without exposing your equity to a single flip. Over a long final table, that quietly adds up to more than the pot you refused to gamble for.

Deals, bubbles and the endgame

Two situations put a pay jump directly in your hands.

The first is the final table bubble, where one player is about to make the money and everyone is playing differently for it. Understanding the final table bubble tells you when the whole table has frozen and your chips are worth more as threats than as calls.

The second is a deal. When four players are left and the jumps ahead are steep, chopping a final table locks in your equity without any variance at all. An ICM chop pays out roughly what the model says your stack is worth, so knowing that number tells you instantly whether an offer on the table is generous or an insult.

Drilling it until it is automatic

Pay jump decisions are pattern recognition, not arithmetic. You build the patterns away from the table.

  1. Run the spots you fold. After a session, put the hand into an ICM equity calculator and see what folding was worth. The number is usually larger than it felt.
  2. Learn three stack shapes. Big covering everyone, middle with shorties behind, and short with fold equity gone. Almost every final table decision is one of those three.
  3. Practise the shove side. Most of your edge comes from applying pressure, not from surviving it.
  4. Check the payout sheet before the final table starts. Steep jumps mean fold; flat ones mean play.

The habit worth building is a two-second pause before any call for a big portion of your stack: what is the next jump, and how many players are more likely than me to bust first? Answer that honestly and most of the flips you would have taken turn into easy folds.

Do pay jumps matter in satellites?

More than anywhere else. Satellites pay every qualifying seat the same amount, so chips above the number needed to survive are worth almost nothing. Folding AA to an all-in is correct in a satellite when you are already locked to qualify.
