Poker Bet Sizing Strategy for Every Street
Solvers choose sizes from range shape, not feel. A third-pot flop c-bet and a 150% river overbet solve two different problems with the same holdings.

A bet size is a decision about which hands you want to keep in the pot and which you want gone. Solvers do not pick sizes by feel — they pick them from the shape of the two ranges and the money left behind. A third-pot flop c-bet and a 150% river overbet can be made with the same holding and still solve completely different problems. One denies equity cheaply across dozens of hands; the other charges a maximum against an opponent who cannot fold everything.
What a bet size actually buys
Every bet does three jobs at once. It charges draws for the right to see another card, it builds a pot for the hands that are already ahead, and it gives your bluffs fold equity. Sizes trade those jobs against each other.
Small bets deny equity across a wide range at almost no risk. Big bets extract from a narrow set of hands and force real folds. You cannot have both from one size, which is why the size question is really a range question.
The larger your bet, the more polarised your range has to be to support it.
Here is the arithmetic that governs the whole subject. The bluff column is how often a pure bluff must succeed to break even; the defence column is how much of their range your opponent must continue with to stop you bluffing profitably with anything.

Read the middle column as pressure. A third-pot bet lets your opponent keep three quarters of their hands; a 150% overbet forces them to throw away 60% of everything they hold. The bigger the size, the more they fold — and the more of your own bluffs you have to genuinely give up when they do not.
Flop sizing: small and wide, or large and narrow
On the flop, both ranges are still wide, and nobody has the nuts very often. That pushes most flop strategies towards the small end.
Take BTN opening to 2.5bb and BB calling, a pot of about 5.5bb on K♠7♥2♦. The button holds every strong king, every overpair and all the AK combinations; the big blind holds none of the best hands with real frequency. A third-pot bet of under 2bb charges the gutshots, the backdoor flush draws and every underpair, and it does so with nearly the entire range. There is no need to bet 4bb to fold out 72o.
Change the board to Q♠J♠9♠ and the picture inverts. The big blind's calling range hits that texture harder than a button opening range does, so the correct button strategy is to check most hands and bet large with the few that want a big pot. The rule of thumb worth internalising is that board texture decides your frequency, and range shape decides your size.
Wide and small applies when you hold a range advantage but not a nut advantage: dry, high-card boards, most single-raised pots in position.
Narrow and large applies when you hold the top of the range and your opponent cannot: paired boards you raised into, ace-high flops in three-bet pots, low connected boards where only you hold the overpairs.
The difference between those two modes is exactly the difference between polarized and linear ranges, and getting the pairing wrong — betting big with a linear range, small with a polarised one — is the most common postflop sizing error in low-stakes games.
Turn sizing: the street that sets up the river
The turn is where most sizing money is won and lost, because it is the last street where you can still shape the river pot.
Work backwards from the stack. If you want to be all-in by the river and the pot is 20bb with 80bb behind, two pot-sized bets do it precisely: 20 into 20 makes the pot 60, and 60 into 60 puts the last of the money in. Using the same fraction of the pot on every remaining street until the stack is in is geometric bet sizing, and it extracts more than any front-loaded line against a range that keeps calling.
If you do not want to be all-in — because your value hands are good but not the nuts — shrink deliberately. Betting two thirds on the turn and checking the river is a coherent plan. Betting pot on the turn and then finding you have 30bb left and no comfortable river size is not.

River sizing: polarisation and overbets
By the river your hand has no equity left to deny. Every chip you put in is either value or a bluff, and the size should follow directly from how capped your opponent is.
When their range cannot contain the best hands, size up. An ace arriving on 8♠6♦3♣ after you three-bet preflop is a card that lives in your range and barely in theirs — that is the textbook setting for when overbetting works. A 150% bet needs to succeed 60% of the time as a bluff, which only a genuinely capped opponent will supply.
When your hand is decent but beats little that calls a big bet, do the opposite. Leading a small block bet of a quarter to a third of the pot out of position sets the price yourself and stops a large bet you would hate to face. Second pair on a wet river is the classic candidate.
Match your bluffs to your value. Whatever size you pick, the bluffing hands you choose must be the ones with no showdown value at all. Turning a busted gutshot into a 150% overbet is fine. Turning bottom pair into one is burning a hand that sometimes wins unimproved.
Sizing from the other chair
The same table read backwards tells you how to respond. Against a third-pot bet you need only 20% equity to call, so folding any hand with a live overcard or a backdoor draw is a mistake. Against a 150% overbet you need 37.5%, and marginal made hands genuinely go in the muck.
Raise sizing follows the same logic with one extra constraint. Because a raise has to beat the money already committed, small raises give the original bettor a cheap price to continue: making it 9bb over a 3bb bet into a 6bb pot lets them call 6bb to win 18bb, so they continue with 25% equity and realise every scrap of it. Raise to roughly three times a small bet and a little over two times a large one, and reserve the enormous raise sizes for the boards where you hold the nut combinations and they cannot.
The other trap is treating a large bet as automatically strong. A pot-sized river bet needs to work half the time, and against most opponents it does. Building your own sizing scheme
You do not need eight sizes. You need three, applied consistently.
- A small size, around a third of the pot. Flop c-bets with wide ranges, block bets, turn probes.
- A big size, two thirds to pot. Value in polarised spots, protection on wet boards, three-bet pots.
- An overbet, 125-150%. Reserved for rivers and turns where your opponent's range is capped.
Multiway pots bend the scheme in one direction only. With three players still in, someone holds a strong hand far more often, so bluffs get cut and value bets get bigger. The small-and-wide flop c-bet that works heads-up simply invites two callers.
Then apply two checks before every bet. First, ask which hands you want to fold out and which you want to call — if the answer is "either is fine", bet small. Second, count the stack: name your river size now, and pick the turn size that reaches it.
Do that consistently and your sizes stop being habits and start being arguments. Most opponents at low stakes bet the same fraction on every street with every hand, which makes them readable and cheap to play against. A scheme that changes with range shape and stack depth is worth several big blinds per hundred hands on its own.

When should I use an overbet?
Overbet when your range is polarised and your opponent's is capped. That normally means a turn or river card that only you can have, such as an ace on a low board you raised preflop. If your opponent can still hold the nuts, an overbet mostly charges you rather than them.
How much equity does a bluff need to work?
Divide the bet by the bet plus the pot. A half-pot bluff needs to work 33% of the time, a pot-sized bluff 50%, and a 150% overbet 60%. That is why large bluffs need a genuinely capped opponent and small bluffs survive on almost any board.
Should I use the same bet size every time?
One size per street is a reasonable simplification while you learn, and a third of the pot on the flop costs very little against most opponents. It becomes a real leak on turns and rivers, where the difference between a block bet and an overbet is worth several big blinds per hand.
