Polarized vs Linear Ranges in One Simple Rule
A linear 3-bet takes your strongest hands; a polarized one pairs nutted hands with suited-ace bluffs. Position and stack depth decide which you use.

A linear 3-bet range takes hands in strict order of strength — AA, KK, QQ, AK, AQ, JJ, on down to a cutoff, with nothing skipped. A polarized range takes a smaller block off the very top, leaves the solid middle behind, and adds hands that are too weak to call, like A5s and 76s. The choice between the two is not a matter of style. It comes down to one question: can the range you are attacking fold?
The two shapes

A linear range is one continuous block from the top. Facing a CO open on the BTN you might 3-bet JJ+, AQ+ and KQs — every hand above the cutoff, none below it. What makes a linear range simple is that there is only one decision to make: where to stop.
A polarized range is two separate blocks with a gap in the middle. Facing an UTG open from the BB you might 3-bet QQ+ and AK for value, add A5s-A2s and a couple of suited connectors as bluffs, and flat the JJ, TT and AQo that the linear version would have raised. That gap is what makes a polarized range awkward to face — the raiser holds either the top of the deck or nothing much at all.
Between them sits the merged range: linear with the weakest hands trimmed off and a little thin value added. Most real solver ranges are somewhere on that spectrum rather than at either pole. The extremes are worth learning because they tell you which direction to lean.
The rule that decides which one
Two questions settle it. How often does your opponent fold, and what does he keep when he does not?
Attack a folding range with your best hands. Attack a range that will not fold with your best hands and your worst.
Against a wide opener — a BTN opening roughly 40-45% of hands — most of that range is junk that folds to a raise. The hands that call are weaker on average than yours, so QQ, JJ, AQ and AJs are all doing real work: they win the pot outright often, and when called they are frequently ahead. There is no reason to demote them to a flat. That is a linear range.
Against a tight opener — UTG opening roughly 15-17% — almost nothing folds, and what continues is strong. Now JJ and AQo are the hands most likely to be dominated when the money goes in. Raising them turns a decent hand into a bad one; calling keeps them cheap and lets them flop well. The raising slots go instead to hands that beat a strong continuing range, plus bluffs chosen for blockers and playability. That is a polarized range.
What each range actually holds

The bottom row is the one players miss. Whichever hands you do not 3-bet become your calling range, so the shape of your raise dictates the shape of everything else you do in that spot.
Position gives the same hand two different jobs
AQo is the test case. On the BTN facing a CO open it is a clear 3-bet: you have position, the opener is wide, and AQo dominates a lot of what calls. From the BB facing UTG it is a flat, because the UTG hands that continue against a 3-bet are AK, QQ+ and not much else — every one of which crushes it.
Position also decides how comfortable your flatting range is, and that feeds straight back into shape. In position you can call profitably with the middle of your range, which frees the 3-bet to go polarized. Out of position you realise equity poorly as a caller, so from the SB you fold more of the middle and raise the rest, which pulls the range back towards linear. The button opening and 3-betting ranges show that contrast clearly: the BTN 3-bets a wider, more polarized set than any other seat because it has the best flatting range behind it.

Stack depth flips the answer
Shape is a function of how much poker is left to play.
Deep, 150bb or more. Polarization gets stronger. Middling hands lose value because deep stacks punish second-best hands over three streets, and they gain value as calls because implied odds go up. Suited wheel aces and suited connectors are the right bluffs precisely because they flop well enough to keep barrelling.
Standard, 100bb. The rules above apply as written. This is what most charts assume.
Short, 40bb or less. Polarization collapses. There is not enough left behind to make playability matter, so a hand like A4s stops being a good bluff and JJ stops being a good flat. Ranges compress towards linear.
Very short, 25bb and under. A 3-bet is effectively a shove. Fold equity plus raw equity when called is the whole calculation, and every range is linear by necessity. This is why tournament play late in a structure looks so different from a cash game.
What it does to the rest of your ranges
The hands you leave out of a 3-bet still have to go somewhere, and this is where the choice pays off or costs you.
Raise linear and your flatting range becomes the leftovers: suited gappers, small pairs, weak suited aces. That range is capped — it contains no premium hands at all, because they were all raised. On an A♠K♦4♣ flop you have very little strong holding, and a competent opponent can bet every street against you. The mechanics of how ranges get capped are worth understanding before you commit to raising every good hand you pick up.
Raise polarized and the opposite happens. Your flatting range keeps JJ, TT, AQ and AJs, so it stays strong on exactly the boards where the leftovers would have struggled. The cost is that your 3-betting range is bluff-heavy and gets punished if your opponent stops folding.
That trade-off is the whole decision in one line: linear protects your raise, polarized protects your call.
Making the choice automatic
- Look at the opener's seat first. Early position means polarized, late position means linear. That single read gets you most of the way there before you have looked at your cards.
- Check the effective stack. Under 40bb, stop polarizing regardless of what the seat suggests.
- Check the player. A station kills your bluffs; a nit who folds to every 3-bet makes bluffs better than any chart says.
- Ask what your calling range looks like afterwards. If raising this hand leaves you with nothing strong to flat, that is an argument for polarizing.
Drill it against real spots rather than memorising two lists. Take a BTN-versus-CO node and a BB-versus-UTG node, play through both, and watch how differently the same hand gets classified. Once the shape becomes automatic, the individual hands stop needing a decision at all.

Does stack depth change whether you polarize?
Yes, and more than most players expect. Deep stacks reward polarized ranges because playability and implied odds matter over three streets. At 25bb or less a 3-bet is close to a shove, postflop barely exists, and pure fold equity plus raw card strength push you back towards linear.
Should you polarize against a player who never folds?
No. Polarized ranges depend on fold equity, and against a calling station the bluff half of the range simply loses money. Strip the bluffs, widen the value side, and 3-bet a linear range of hands that are ahead when called.
