What Are the Stone-Cold Nuts in Poker?

The stone-cold nuts is the best possible five-card hand on a given board: nothing in the deck beats it, and at worst it ties. Stone-cold is the emphasis — not the effective nuts, not the nuts unless one specific holding is out there, but a hand that cannot lose at showdown. Every board has one, and it changes with every card that comes off.

Reading the nuts on any board

Work downwards from the top of the ranking. Ask whether the board allows a straight flush, then quads, then a full house, and stop at the first category that is physically possible. Then work out which exact two hole cards complete it.

On J♠T♠4♠ most players see A♠K♠ and call it the nut flush. The stone-cold nuts is Q♠9♠, a queen-high straight flush. A♠K♠ is second best, which is a very different hand when 200bb sits behind.

On K♥Q♦J♣ no flush or full house is available yet, so the nuts is Broadway: any ace with a ten. More than one player can hold it, and that is the useful reminder here — the nuts is a hand, not a seat, so A♦T♦ and A♣T♣ chop.

What resets the nuts

Every new card can demote the hand that was unbeatable a moment earlier. On 9♠7♠2♠ the stone-cold nuts is A♠K♠, because no straight flush is possible and your second spade plays as a kicker — A♠4♠ is not the nuts.

Pair that board with the 7♦ on the turn and the picture inverts. Quad sevens are live, 99 and 22 make full houses, and the ace-high flush you were happy to stack off with has become a bluff-catcher. Paired boards demote flushes and straights; three to a suit demotes straights.

Why it matters

Two decisions ride on it. When you hold the stone-cold nuts you never need protection, so the only way to misplay it is to win too little — take the largest size the texture and your opponent's range can pay.

When you do not hold it, count how easily the other player can. A pot-sized river bet on K♥Q♦J♣ deserves real respect, since ace-ten is in every range that saw a flop. The same bet on 9♠7♠2♠7♦ is far less credible, because the nuts is two specific cards nobody is guaranteed to have.

The same logic sets bet sizing over whole ranges: whichever range holds more of the nut combinations earns the right to bet large.
