What Is a Blank Card in Poker?
A blank is a turn or river that changes nothing: no flush, no straight, no overcard. Learn why blanks usually favour the aggressor's range.
A blank is a turn or river card that completes no draw and changes nobody's range: no flush card, no straight card, no overcard to the board. The hand you held on the previous street is still the hand you hold. That inertia is the whole point — a card that helps nobody helps whoever was already ahead.
What counts as a blank
Blankness is a property of the board, not of the card's rank. A deuce is not automatically a blank and an ace is not automatically live; what matters is whether the card touches the draws already out there.
| Flop | Blank turn | Live turn |
|---|---|---|
| J♠7♦3♣ | 2♥ | A♦ |
| K♠8♦4♣ | 2♣ | 7♥ |
| 9♥8♥5♠ | 2♦ | 6♥ |
On the rainbow J♠7♦3♣ most of the deck is a blank. On 9♥8♥5♠ almost nothing is: every heart completes a flush and most cards between a 4 and a J touch some straight. Wet boards run out of blanks, which is why they are harder to barrel.
Why blanks favour the aggressor
Ranges do not update on a blank, and that asymmetry does the work. If you raised preflop and bet the flop, your range is already weighted towards overpairs and top pair. The caller holds more draws and middling pairs — hands that needed the board to change. When it refuses to, they are stuck with what they had.
Say you open A♥K♥ from the CO for 2.5bb, the BB calls, and the flop is K♠8♦4♣. You bet 4bb into 7bb and get called. The turn is the 2♣: their 6♦5♦ still needs a 7, their 9♠7♠ has lost its backdoor spades, and their pair of eights is no stronger than it was.

How to play a blank
The arithmetic is plain. A flush draw is roughly 35% to arrive with two cards to come; once the turn blanks, it is about 18%, and the price your opponent needs doubles with it.
- As the aggressor, keep firing. Your range is unchanged and theirs is weaker, so the same bet now folds out hands that called the flop with a plan.
- Bluff with the hands that just lost something. Busted backdoor draws are your best barrels on a blank, because they have no showdown value while your ace-high still does.
- As the caller, do not overfold. The card that failed to help you failed to help them too. MDF still applies: against a two-thirds-pot bet you defend roughly 60% of your range.
Run the spot through the poker equity calculator once and the effect becomes obvious. Put K♥Q♥ against a draw-heavy calling range on K♠8♦4♣, then swap the 2♣ turn for the 7♥ and watch how much equity crosses the table on one card.
