Poker Solvers for Beginners: Where to Start

A solver answers one narrow question at a time. What to ask first, why the output mixes several actions, and the three settings beginners get wrong.

A solver does not know how to play poker. It answers one narrow question — this board, these two ranges, these stack sizes, this list of bet sizes — and it answers that question almost exactly. Beginners get little out of solvers because they ask vague questions and then read the answers as commandments. Ask something you could have argued about with a friend, and the output is useful on the first day.

Start with what the machine is doing

A solver takes the spot you define and plays it against itself over and over, adjusting both sides until neither can improve by changing anything. What comes out is an equilibrium for that spot and nothing else. Move the stacks from 100bb to 40bb and every number in the tree moves with them.

That is the whole mechanism, and understanding what a poker solver is matters far more than which brand you eventually run. The software is commodity; the question you feed it is not.

A solver's answer is only as good as the question. Garbage ranges in, confident garbage out.

Nothing in the output is a general law of poker. It is the answer to your inputs, and it is only as trustworthy as they are.

Ask one question at a time

The most common opening mistake is sitting down and asking "how do I play flops?" There is no such solve. There are millions of flop solves, and averaging them in your head produces nothing you can use on Tuesday night.

A usable question names every variable. "BTN opens 2.5x, BB calls, 100bb effective, flop K♥7♦2♣ — how often does BTN bet, and which hands check?" That has one answer, and you can hold it in your head afterwards.

Three rules for choosing your first questions:

  • One spot, one street. Solve the whole tree if you like, but only study the flop until you can predict it. Turn and river study is wasted on a flop you cannot yet explain.
  • A spot you actually played. Take a hand from your last session where you were genuinely unsure. You already care about the answer, which is most of what makes it stick.
  • A question with a number in it. "Does the BTN bet more than half the time here?" is checkable. "What is the right strategy?" is not.

The three settings beginners get wrong

Most bad solves are bad before they start running. These are the inputs that decide whether the output means anything.

Ranges are the setting that decides everything. Give the BB a calling range full of hands nobody calls with and the solver will dutifully build a strategy against a player who does not exist. As a sanity check, the BTN opens roughly 40-45% of hands in 6-max and UTG roughly 15-17% — if your inputs are far from that shape without a reason, fix them before you read a single output number.

Too many bet sizes make the answer unreadable. Each extra size splits the strategy into thinner slices, multiplies the run time, and gives you a chart you cannot memorise. Two sizes produce a strategy you can actually take to the table.

Rake and stack depth are not cosmetic. Rake makes marginal hands worse and tightens continuing ranges, particularly at low stakes. A solve run at 200bb tells you very little about a 45bb spot.

The output mixes actions, and that is correct

Open your first solve and you will see something like 62% bet, 38% check on the same hand. That is not the solver hedging or failing to converge. Some hands are worth exactly the same whether you bet or check, and mixing between the two is what stops an opponent from exploiting either choice — the reasoning behind why solvers mix strategies is the single idea that makes solver output readable.

What matters is not the split on one hand but the shape of the whole range. Large bets almost always come from a polarized betting range: very strong hands and hands with nothing, while the medium-strength hands check. Small bets come from wide, flat ranges. Learn to spot which shape you are looking at and you can reconstruct most of the details yourself.

For play, take the majority action nearly every time. A hand that bets 62% and checks 38% loses almost nothing if you simply bet it. Treat the mix as a label saying "this hand is borderline" rather than an instruction to flip a coin at the table.

Read a solve from the top down

The output is thousands of numbers and you need about six of them. Work downwards, never upwards.

  1. Overall frequency first. How often does this player bet the flop at all, and at what size? One number, and it tells you more about the spot than any individual hand.
  2. Then hand classes. Top pair, second pair, flush draws, gutshots, ace-high. Ask what each group does as a block.
  3. Individual combos last. Only look at a specific hand when it has surprised you, and then ask why before you accept the answer.

Guess before you look, every time. Write down your expectation — "I think this bets about two thirds of the time, small" — and then check. The gap between your guess and the solve is the only part of the output that teaches you anything, and you cannot see that gap if you read the answer first.

What to work on in your first month

Pick a narrow programme and finish it. Breadth is what makes solver study feel productive and change nothing.

  1. One preflop spot per week. BTN versus BB, CO versus BTN, BB defence against a 3-bet. Learn the shape, not the grid.
  2. Three flop textures. An ace-high dry board, a low connected board, a paired board. These cover most of what you will face.
  3. One turn decision. What happens when the flush completes, and what happens when the board bricks.
  4. A weekly review. Take five hands you misplayed and solve only those.

Before you spend anything

Do the free work first. Not immediately. A solver is worth running once you already know pot odds, position and rough preflop ranges, because those are the inputs it needs from you. Before that point, free equity and pot-odds tools plus a set of preflop charts will fix more of your leaks per hour of study.

How long should a solve run?

Until the exploitability figure stops moving in any way that changes the strategy you can see. Stopping early gives you numbers that look precise but are still drifting, which is worse than no answer at all because you will trust them.
