PLO Pot Odds: Why Omaha Math Is Not Hold'em Math

Pot-limit Omaha deals every player six two-card combos, so equities run close and draws get huge. How to price a call when bets are capped at the pot.

Pot-limit Omaha deals you four cards, which is six different two-card hands, and exactly two of them must play. That compression pushes equities together, makes draws enormous, and quietly breaks most of the pot-odds habits you built in hold'em. The one structural gift Omaha gives you is the betting cap: nobody can bet more than the pot, so the worst price you will ever face is 2-to-1.

Six combinations in every hand

A hold'em hand is a single combination. A PLO hand is six, because any two of your four cards can pair with three board cards.

That is why a strong PLO hand is only ever a modest favourite. In hold'em, AA against a random hand runs around 85%. Nothing in Omaha comes close, because your opponent's four cards give them six chances to connect with the flop instead of one.

The practical consequence is that you should stop thinking about having the best hand and start thinking about margins. A 60/40 edge is large in PLO. A 55/45 edge is ordinary. Preflop blowouts barely exist.

Board reading changes too. The logic behind counting hand combinations applies with six times the density, so when a straight or a flush completes, far more of your opponent's range actually contains it.

The price ceiling nobody uses

Pot-limit betting caps the largest bet at the current pot. Work the arithmetic through and something clean falls out.

In pot-limit, no bet or raise can ever demand more than 33.3% equity.

Facing a pot-sized bet, you risk $100 to win $200. Facing a pot-sized bet and then a pot-sized re-raise, the numbers grow but the ratio does not — you are still being offered exactly 2-to-1. There is no overbet in this game, no shove for three times the pot, no 45% price.

Because a third is the ceiling and Omaha equities cluster near the middle, over-folding is a far more expensive habit in PLO than in hold'em. A hand with a weak pair and a backdoor wrap often clears 33% against a betting range. The identical hand in hold'em is an easy fold.

Your outs are lying to you

The rule of 2 and 4 works because it approximates small numbers well. PLO draws are not small numbers.

Take J♥T♥7♠6♠ on a flop of 9♦8♠2♣. Any Q, J, T, 7, 6 or 5 completes a straight — 20 clean outs.

The rule of 4 calls that 80%. The true figure is closer to 70%, because with that many outs the turn and river possibilities overlap heavily and the shortcut double-counts them. Past roughly twelve outs, shave ten points off whatever the rule of 4 tells you. The mechanics of how to count outs matter far more in Omaha than any shortcut does.

Nut outs and dead outs

Twenty outs only impress if they win, and in PLO plenty of them do not.

Return to that wrap. A Q, a 7, a 6 or a 5 gives you the effective nuts. A J or a T gives you 7-8-9-T-J, which any opponent holding a queen beats with the same card. Six of your twenty outs make you the second-best straight, and second-best straights in Omaha lose stacks rather than pots.

So run two counts, not one. Total outs tell you how often you improve. Nut outs tell you how often improving is safe to bet, raise and stack off with.

  • Bare draws are worth less than they look. A wrap with no suit and no pair behind it has to win on the turn or river alone.
  • Nut redraws are worth more than they look. A wrap that also holds the nut flush draw is a big combo draw, and hands like that are how stacks get built.
  • Non-nut flush draws are traps. The card that makes your king-high flush is the same card that makes somebody's ace-high flush, and six combinations per opponent means somebody usually has it.

Redraws are worth more than raw equity

Flop equity is a snapshot. In PLO the money usually goes in on the turn, so what matters is where your equity travels.

Two hands can both be 60% on the flop and be worth entirely different amounts. A naked wrap is 60% now and can be drawing dead by the turn when a flush card lands. A smaller wrap holding the nut flush draw is 60% now and still has a hand on almost every turn card.

This is why the strongest PLO hands are the ones that keep making the nuts on later streets. When you compare your equity against the price, ask a second question straight away: on how many turn cards am I still happy putting in a pot-sized bet? If the answer is most of them, call wider than the raw number suggests. If it is few of them, the price is worse than the arithmetic claims.

Defending against pot-sized bets

Minimum defence frequency is pot divided by pot plus bet, so against a pot-sized bet you need to continue with about half your range. In hold'em that is demanding. In Omaha it is easy, because nearly every hand you hold has some way to get there.

The discipline runs the other way. Your problem is not finding 50% of hands with 33% equity — it is refusing the ones that reach 33% entirely through outs that arrive second-best. Continue with nut-shaped equity and fold the hands whose equity is all bottom-end straights and third-nut flushes, even when the raw number clears the price.

Blockers do real work here too. Holding the A♠ kills the nut flush combinations in every opponent's range at once, which makes your bluffs cheaper and your calls safer.

A routine that works

  1. Price first. Pot-sized means 33.3%, two-thirds means 28.6%. Fix the target before you look at your hand.
  2. Count distinct outs, then shave the rule of 4 by ten points on anything above twelve outs.
  3. Split them into nut outs and dead outs. Only the nut outs justify raising.
  4. Ask what happens when you hit and get raised. If the honest answer is that you fold, those outs were never worth their face value.
