How to Play Suited Connectors Profitably
Suited connectors flop a made flush less than 1% of the time. Their profit comes from draws, position and implied odds, not from hitting big.

Suited connectors earn their money from draws, position and the stack behind you — not from hitting the hand you are imagining. A flush arrives on the flop less than one time in a hundred. Play them in position with deep stacks against opponents who cannot fold an overpair, and fold them the moment any one of those conditions disappears.
What a suited connector actually flops
Take 87s. The flush you are dreaming of shows up on the flop under 1% of the time. A flush draw appears roughly one flop in ten, an open-ended straight draw about the same, and around a third of flops pair you — usually with a pair too weak to call two streets of betting.
Add that up and 87s misses completely more often than it connects in any meaningful way. That is not an argument for folding it. It is the reason the hand has to be played differently from AJo or KQo, which flop top pair constantly and win small pots by default.
The value is concentrated rather than spread out. Most of the time you give up on the flop for the cost of one preflop raise, and that fold should cost you 2.5bb, not 12bb of curiosity money. Occasionally you flop a monster or a big draw and win a stack. Everything below is about keeping the cheap folds cheap and making the rare big pots as big as possible.
Not all connectors are equal
Treating 54s and JTs as the same category is the first mistake. The gap between them is larger than the gap between AQo and A9o.

The higher hands win extra pots by making a pair that is actually good. The lower hands never do that, which is why the smallest suited connectors need much stricter conditions before they are worth a chip. One rung down again sit suited gapper hands like 86s and 97s, which lose a chunk of straight equity and belong in a narrower set of seats.
Position does more work than the cards
87s on the BTN and 87s UTG are barely the same hand. The cards have not changed; everything that determines whether they make money has.
In position you see your opponent act first on every street. You take a free card with your draw, bet the turn when a scare card lands in your favour, and fold for nothing when the board is hopeless. Out of position you check-call, check-call, and then guess on the river with a hand that was never strong enough for three streets. The same 76s that prints money on the BTN is a slow loser from UTG, and no amount of postflop skill closes that gap.
That difference is why the BTN opens roughly 40-45% of hands in 6-max while UTG opens roughly 15-17%. Suited connectors live almost entirely in the difference between those two numbers.
Before the flop: open, call, or fold
Opening is the easy case. From the CO you risk 2.5bb to win the 1.5bb in blinds plus the chance to play a pot in position, and against the two seats left to act 87s has plenty of equity. That is a clear open.
Cold-calling a raise out of position is where the money leaks away. Calling 3bb with 76s from the HJ after an UTG open means playing the rest of the hand from behind against the tightest range at the table, with players still to act behind you who can squeeze. Fold, or 3-bet if the spot supports it, but do not flat.
Big blind defence is the opposite. You have already invested 1bb, so against a 2.5x BTN open you are calling 1.5bb into a pot of about 4bb and need well under 30% equity. Almost every suited connector clears that bar. The solver preflop opening ranges for each seat show where each pair of connectors enters the range, and how quickly that entry point moves as you shift seats.
As 3-bet bluffs, the mid and small connectors are excellent. They unblock the hands you want your opponent to fold and they flop well when he calls, which is exactly what a bluffing hand needs. Solvers mostly fold these hands to an UTG open and mostly raise them against a BTN steal.
Position, stack depth, and an opponent who pays. Suited connectors need all three. Take away any one of them and the hand becomes a fold.

After the flop: draws first, pairs last
Your best flops are draws, not pairs. An open-ended straight draw with a backdoor flush is worth far more than middle pair, because it gives you a hand you can bet twice with and still improve — a flush draw gets there about 35% of the time by the river with two cards to come. Middle pair, by contrast, wins a 12bb pot at best and loses a 100bb one at worst.
That is what makes wet board textures your friend when you hold connectors and your enemy when you hold an overpair. On 9♠7♦5♠ your 86s has a straight and a huge range advantage over a preflop raiser holding mostly big cards. On K♦K♣4♥ you have nothing and should give up immediately.
When you do make the hand, get paid. A flopped straight on 9♠7♦5♠ is the whole reason you played 86s, and slowplaying it on a board that wet gives away most of what you came for. Any spade, any 6, any 8 can kill your action or beat you outright on the turn. Bet, and bet again.
Implied odds, and when they are fiction
Suited connectors are the definition of an implied-odds hand: you call 3bb now because the flops you hit are worth a full stack later. The raw pot odds almost never justify the call on their own. Three conditions must hold before you may count on the money that is not yet in the pot.
- Stacks must be deep. Aim for at least 15 to 20 times the amount you are calling still behind. At 100bb a 3bb call is fine; at 35bb it is not.
- Your hand must be hidden. A straight on 9♠7♦5♠ is visible to everyone; the same straight on K♦8♣6♥ with a 7 on the turn is invisible.
- Your opponent must pay. Against someone who folds top pair to a river raise, your implied odds are zero however deep you both are.
Understanding the implied odds properly means being honest about which of those three conditions actually holds. When you use them to justify a call in a 40bb pot against a nit, you are not calculating; you are telling yourself a story.
The leaks that cost the most
Playing them out of position. The single most expensive habit. Every seat you move away from the BTN costs the hand real value, and cold-calling from early position with 65s loses money at every stake.
Calling 3-bets too wide. A 3-bet shrinks the stack-to-pot ratio and kills the implied odds that made the hand playable. Most suited connectors are folds against a 3-bet unless you are deep and in position.
Falling in love with the low end. The 6 in your 65s on 9-8-7 makes the bottom straight, and someone holding JT has the top one. The same logic applies to small flushes: the card that makes your hand is the card that makes a better one for somebody else.
Overplaying weak top pair. Top pair with 87s on 8-5-2 is a one-street hand. Stack off with it and you will find you are drawing to two outs against the overpair that raised preflop.
Play suited connectors like the drawing hands they are: cheap to enter, easy to abandon, and devastating on the flops that matter. Most of the profit is decided before a single card comes off, in the choice of seat and the size of the stack behind you.
