Poker Trainer Apps Ranked by What They Actually Drill
A trainer is only as good as the ranges behind it. How to check whether an app drills solver output or one coach's opinion, and which ones do.

The best poker trainer app is the one whose feedback comes from a solver rather than somebody's opinion. Everything else — the interface, the streaks, the daily hand count — sits on top of that single fact. What follows is how to tell the two apart before you pay, and how the common options actually differ once you look past the marketing copy.
The question that separates trainers
Every trainer does the same thing on the surface. It shows you a spot, you pick an action, it tells you whether you were right.
The difference is where that verdict comes from. A weak trainer compares your click against a range somebody typed in by hand — a coach's chart, a forum consensus, a simplified grid built to be easy to memorise. A strong one compares it against solver output for that exact configuration: this stack depth, this rake, this many players, this board.
The two feel identical for the first ten hands, because both agree that you open AA from UTG and fold 72o from the SB. They come apart the moment the spot stops being obvious — 40bb effective, a limper in front, a board that hits the caller's range harder than yours. Hand-typed charts smooth those spots into a single answer. Solvers do not.
A trainer is a delivery mechanism for ranges. Judge it by the ranges, not by the interface.
What to check before you pay
Five things, and you can check all of them from the free tier or a demo.
- Where the ranges came from. If an app will not tell you whether its answers are solver-derived or hand-authored, assume hand-authored. Solver-backed products advertise it, because it is expensive to build.
- Whether the parameters match your game. A chart solved at 100bb with no rake is wrong for a 40bb tournament and wrong again for a raked $0.25/$0.50 online game. Rake alone tightens correct opening ranges noticeably.
- What the feedback actually says. "Incorrect" is a scolding. "You called; the solver folds, costing 0.4bb" is information. The second kind teaches you which mistakes are worth fixing.
- Whether postflop exists at all. Plenty of apps stop at preflop and call themselves complete trainers. Preflop is the right place to start, not the whole game.
- Whether you can drill your format. Six-max, nine-max, heads-up and MTT spots have genuinely different solutions. A trainer that only knows 100bb 6-max cash is a partial answer for everyone else.
Anything an app cannot answer in one sentence here is usually an answer it does not want to give.

Note that the top three are not really competitors. A desktop solver answers questions you already know how to ask. A trainer builds the reflexes that let you stop asking. Serious players often end up using both, and nobody needs a fifth flashcard app.
Preflop is where a trainer repays fastest
You make a preflop decision on every hand you are dealt. You make a river decision on perhaps one hand in eight. That ratio is the entire argument for starting where you do.
Preflop is also the only part of poker with a fixed correct answer. Once stack depth, rake and table size are set, the solver's opening range for each seat does not change based on reads, board texture or how the last orbit went. That makes it memorisable in a way that no postflop spot ever is, and it means drilling repetitions genuinely converts into table performance.
The gaps are rarely where players expect. Most know the button is wide — roughly 40-45% of hands in 6-max — and that UTG is tight at around 15-17%. The seats in between are where money leaks, which is why the cutoff opening range is worth drilling on its own rather than eyeballing as "somewhere in the middle". Postflop is where trainers actually separate
Preflop coverage is cheap to build. Postflop is not, and this is where the category thins out dramatically.
A real postflop trainer has to solve the spot you are looking at, with the ranges that would genuinely arrive there after your preflop action. Anything less gives you a board and a plausible-sounding answer with no solve underneath. Ask whether the trainer can handle a turn probe, a multiway flop, or a river spot at 60bb — those are the ones an incomplete library quietly avoids.
The other thing to demand postflop is EV loss rather than a right-or-wrong stamp. Many postflop errors cost almost nothing; a handful cost several big blinds each time you make them. Without a number attached, you cannot tell which is which, and you will spend your study time polishing decisions that were never worth anything.
What the AI label actually means
Half the trainers on the market now describe themselves as AI-powered, and the phrase covers two entirely different things. One is a language model writing coaching text over the top of a fixed chart. The other is a neural network approximating solver output so that arbitrary spots can be solved quickly instead of being looked up from a pre-baked library.

Turning drills into results
An app cannot fix the part where you close it after four days. The players who improve treat training as a short daily fixture rather than an occasional binge, and they drill one spot type at a time until the answers stop being surprising.
Twenty minutes on blind defence, then stop. Tomorrow, three-bet pots as the preflop raiser.
